Okay, the most important thing is this: if you live in Mesa, be sure to get out and vote Tuesday on Questions 1 & 2. This city's population has exploded, though not quite so exponentially as Chandler, and this is really a pivitol time for how we want city government to be run, what services we want from the city, and how we're going to pay for it. Do the research first, because a lot of people who haven't been paying attention for the past 5-10 years are suddenly rabbiting forth like experts. I recommend rummaging through the Mesa section of the East Valley Tribune; they've done an excellent series of articles on how we've gotten into the current budget crunch.
What it boils down to, in the end, is this: Stuff costs money. If you want the stuff, you spend the money. If you don't, you don't.
Me, I think it's a little scary when Mayor Keno Hawker, a hardass fiscal conservative who tried to scuttle the Mesa Arts Center after it had been approved by voters, is suddenly grinning in front of the MAC in many glossy spreads (like the America West in-flight magazine) in a desperate attempt to attract business and tourist dollars to Mesa, 'cause that's basically what he's got to work with. Though I must admit as a loyal MAC supporter I also felt a certain amount of glee.
Oh yeah, speaking of tourist dollars to Mesa, I learned last weekend at Leprecon that next year's Lep will be at the Mesa Convention Center, just a few miles from my house. W00t! I may even go the whole three days! What would also be cool would be if they have an author GoH I happen to like, and if Gary brought in a filk GoH who was on that list of recommendations I made awhile back, that would be even cooler.
