Dear Savannah,

Yes, I know it's hard to curb your kittenish curiosity, but horning in on Peaseblossom when she's engaged on the litterbox is a sure-fire way to get yourself a royal hissing - or perhaps you've learned that now.

Here's a news article I haven't been seeing in the U.S. press - it seems those lurid stories of lord-of-the-flies behavior amongst the urban poor in New Orleans post-Katrina were largely untrue.

Many years ago, when the company I work for was part of Motorola and Motorola had its own private gym right across the parking lot, I took Yoga classes for awhile. Ever since then I've been doing a brief sun salutation in the morning, and gotten quite good at some positions, such as the tree. Yesterday morning I discovered that it's almost impossible to hold the plank position when a 6-month-old kitten climbs into your nightie.

Yes, I'm trying to add another cat to the family again, and this time it seems to be working. I adopted Savannah (actually her shelter name was "Betsy", but I object to giving cats common human names) from Friends for Life at the Petsmart last Saturday. Peaseblossom is still pissed-off and hissy, but her attitude's been improving daily - as well it should, since she outweighs Savannah by a factor of about three and should eventually realize the kitten isn't going to beat her up. (Although right now she's trying to eat Peasie's bowl. I mean, the bowl.)

Photo to be posted when Blogger's photo posting service gets back on line. "There were errors during upload." How lame is that?

This coming weekend I'm making the annual pilgrimage up to the Prescott Folk Festival, and my annual dinner at Prescott Brewing Company - yum! Unfortunately I spaced hotel arrangements until a couple weeks ago, and the Vendome was booked, so I'm staying in a chain hotel this year. Should be fun, and the weather forcast is great. I'm playing the Exhibit Hall on Saturday at 1:30, and joining the Songwriters' Circle on the same stage at 3:30.

It was a small crowd at Fidd's last night [something about Joe Bethancourt giving a house concert with free food?], but we raised an amazing $121 in the tip jar for the Red Cross, so kudos you guys for pitching in!

Quote of the day, from Fafblog: "...and what gay beast, its hour come round at last, minces cattily towards Bethlehem to be born?"

Went out to Usery Park this morning to hike the Wind Cave trail, my first hike in two months. Calves complained bitterly at first, but loosened up after about half an hour. The temperature was not bad, somewhere in the 80's, but the humidity was enough to keep me from doing the summit trail this time.

Tom & I are playing Fidd's tomorrow; Forrest & Jennifer will also be helping out, along with anyone Tom's invited. We are sooo winging it this time.

Penguin Porn

So I finally got out to see March of the Penguins yesterday. My thoughts:

Burn the toast and boil the tea; you can't take the pie from me...

I had way too interesting a drive home from Coppercon last night. Coming down I-17, I'm just about ready to take the I-10 off-ramp when I see the sign warning that I-10 east tunnel is closed. Huh. Didn't see anything about that on the way up. But there's no other way to the east valley at this point, and traffic's pretty light at 12:30, so I plug along. Sure enough, at 7th Ave we all have to get off the freeway and take an extended tour of Phoenix's red light district. Finally back on the freeway, I realize the detour has completely bypassed the Loop 202 offramp, dammit! Thinking quickly (for 1:00 in the morning) I take the Sky Harbor exit and detour through the airport, knowing that an east exit dumps out onto the 202. That's about as deserted as I've ever seen the airport; I think it's about as late at night as I've seen it, though it seems to me that on one of those Ottawa trips I got out to the curb around midnight.

The AZ Republic had a nice bunch of articles on the new Mesa Arts Center in its Sunday edition, one of them lamenting the lack of sit-down restaurants downtown in the MAC area. One would-be restaurantuer was quoted as saying that Mesa needed to provide more incentives to prospective restaurants. Hunh? Getting in on the ground floor with a built-in clientele- the theater and concert crowd - isn't enough incentive to open a business?

Many people who are refusing to leave New Orleans in the past week are those unwilling to leave their pets behind. The HSUS is rescuing pets who were stranded by the hurricane, and providing shelter for those who were smuggled out by their owners.

NASFiC (Cascadiacon) was pretty laid back this year. I wasn't the only filker who wasn't attending the full con, and filk liason Leslie Jordan worked heroically to get everyone's concerts rescheduled. The Saturday night filk circle was expecially fun. Standout costumes at the rather short Masquerade were disco Snape and a kangaroo with giant butterfly wings. (No, not the same entry.) Sunday I was off visiting my family and missed some panels I was scheduled for, but made up for it by sneaking onto the songwriting panel on Monday with Anne Prather and Heather Alexander.

Sometimes when I go back to visit, I wonder what it would be like to move back to the Sound area. It's not serious speculation; real estate is through the roof there, and the winter weather used to leave me seriously depressed. I think it's seeing the beautiful gardens in front of every house, and the brightly-painted houses - HOAs haven't run rampant, at least not in the areas where my mom and brother live.
