File this under "Suck".

I was picking up my towel and BodyCombat card from the front desk guy at Fitness Works this evening when he said, "Did you know that we're closing at the end of the month?" Yes, this month, being July, the end of which is a week and a half away. Not because of declining enrollment; the landlord wanted to double the rent. So now instead of having my gym a convenient mile away from my house, I now have a 7-mile drive to the east Mesa facility, which barely gives me time to gulp my dinner on nights I have classes.

It's stupid, because the old gym isn't in a trendy yuppified area where the property values have gone up or where renters with deep pockets are eager to locate their high-end boutiques. It's in a strip mall, next to a chain Mexican restaurant and a perpertually-empty storefront, with a charming view of the self-storage yard across the street.

As you might have inferred from my last post, I did make it up to Sedona yesterday. It still got up to 98, but at least the morning was relatively cool. My first choice of hike, the A.B. Young Trail, panned out when I couldn't find a river crossing, so I picked up a guidebook and chose the Huckaby Trail, which is just off Schnebly Hill Road. (Haven't you always wondered what was up Schnebly Hill Road?) This is a nifty little trail that winds around for a bit, then takes you along a ridge overlooking Hwy 89, then drops you down to creek level in the canyon below the Midgely Bridge. BTW, have the signs for this bridge always read "Midgely Bridgely"?

Recent news has me grateful that my religion doesn't have a Holy Land. If everyone involved weren't so caught up in desire for posession of a specific stinkin' piece of territory, we could set up the modern state of Israel in Florida, put Palestine in Baja or the Kamchatka Peninsula or something, and make the Dalai Lama mayor of Jerusalem.

I have one of those newfangled "gradual" alarm clocks that's supposed to gently awaken you by striking a chime at progressively shorter intervals. The problem is, it sounds not so much like a chime as it does one of those counter bells you use to summon the clerk at the dry cleaner etc. Snaps me wide awake. I need to find a muffling method...

Can anyone tell me what the #$*%&*!! happened to cause all the traffic on eastbound 101 to come to a screeching halt this afternoon? Once I got on the onramp from I-17, it took me 50 minutes to get to the 7th Ave exit - the first exit off the 101. By then of course traffic had just started flowing again. The only thing that preserved my sanity during the wait was a show on NPR analysing The Beatles' Revolver.

If I can drag myself out of bed early enough tomorrow morning, I'm going to play hookey and drive up to Sedona for a hike.

Breathe.

in.

out.

I happened to be driving home from the airport last night on the 202 shortly after 9:00, when all the fireworks displays were going on. The 202 is elevated just enought that once you hit Tempe you have a clear view all the way across the Valley. I counted a minimum of three displays in the East Valley and one up north in Scottsdale. I may have caught a glimpse of one way off in north Phoenix, but I didn't think it was wise to be craning my neck the opposite direction I was driving. Especially when all the other drivers on the freeway were gawping at fireworks. Pretty!

Oddly enough, my shy "little" Frodo gave me the most enthusiastic greeting when I came in the door. He's turning into quite the sweet cat.
